Safeguarding Travel on State Route 53
Lake APC Partners with Residents to Improve Transportation Safety on State Route 53
Lake APC recently conducted a survey to help identify transportation priorities and projects to address community concerns along State Route 53 within the Clearlake city limits—and to support funding efforts for future safety improvements.

Lake APC's public survey was part of the Council's State Route 53 Corridor Project Prioritization Study. Lake APC emphasized public participation in the survey would be crucial to securing future grant funding for transportation safety improvements in Lake County.

Survey respondents were asked to share their most concerning transportation safety issues while driving, walking, biking and using public transportation on State Route 53. Survey choices included speeding, lack of sidewalks, poor lighting, unsafe driving and lack of public transportation. Additionally, an interactive digital map engaged participants in identifying the locations of their highest-ranking transportation safety concern.

Residents also ranked their top priorities for transportation safety improvements and projects on State Route 53. Respondents could choose from safety improvements including protected bike lanes, better street lighting, more public transit shelters, improved crosswalks and stronger enforcement of speeding and distracted driving. Project suggestions included adding lanes at intersections, new and improved public transportation accommodations, converting intersections to roundabouts or interchanges and increased roadway lighting.
Many thanks to all who participated, and to the Lake Area Planning Council for leading the State Route 53 Corridor Project Prioritization Study! Findings will be used to pursue grant funding for priority projects!
