Lake County Appointed Robert Bernstein, M.D., as its New Public Health Officer
During the June 3 Board meeting, the Lake County Board of Supervisors appointed Robert Bernstein, M.D., a longtime medical epidemiologist with vast experience in public health positions, as the county’s next Public Health Officer.

With decades of leadership across local, state, and national public health systems, Dr. Robert Bernstein brings deep expertise and fresh energy to Lake County at a time when strong, experienced guidance is essential to advancing health equity and community resilience.

Dr. Bernstein brings over 40 years of public health experience to Lake County, including leadership roles in Butte and Tuolumne Counties and recent service as a medical consultant for the California Department of Public Health. Dr. Bernstein's career has also led him to advise the president of the United States and directors of the CDC and FEMA, among many others. Board President and District 3 Supervisor Eddie Crandell praised Dr. Bernstein’s background stating, “His passion for public health is clear, and his breadth of experiences and relationships will be a great asset to Lake County.”

Dr. Bernstein holds prestigious degrees, such as a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Penn State University with a post-doctoral research position in Pharmacology at Yale University. Dr. Bernstein also has taught at Emory University’s School of Public Health and has published more than 60 papers in peer-reviewed journals on preventive medicine and public health topics, based on his work conducted around the world. Excited about his new role, Dr. Bernstein stated, “The opportunity to bring the experiences I have gained over my career to make a true difference in Lake County’s rural communities is really special.”
