Lake County Honors Community Hero
Code Enforcement Officer Recognized for Quick and Caring Response to Cole Fire
During the Cole Fire, Wes Nelson alerted neighbors and helped protect homes. His quick thinking and genuine concern kept residents safe, highlighting his steadfast dedication to the Lake County community.

On August 19, 2025, Community Development Director (CDD) Mireya Turner presented Wes Nelson, a Code Enforcement Officer, a certificate of appreciation for his dedicated service, swift action and unwavering care in keeping Lake County residents safe during a recent emergency event.

Director Turner explained, on August 8, 2025, Nelson was on a site visit on Bottle Rock Road when he noticed a smoke plume, later identified as the Cole Fire:
“He called it in but didn’t leave. He went to Penson Court, banging on doors, alerting neighbors and making sure everyone knew about the emergency. He stayed until he was relieved by emergency personnel. Our team is trained, smart and hardworking, but one thing we cannot teach is a caring heart and dedication to the community. This certificate only begins to show our gratitude. I appreciate the Board welcoming opportunities to recognize the exceptional.”

District 5 Supervisor Jessica Pyska shared that a Penson Court resident contacted her to express gratitude for Nelson’s actions. She shared, “He really wanted me to know just how much he appreciated you. The Cole Fire ended up very close to the homes in that region, so Wes potentially saved property and lives.”
Humble in receiving the certificate, Nelson said, “It could have gotten bad quickly. I appreciate the recognition, but I didn’t do anything different than most would. You see a fire, you respond and look out for the community. I just hope everyone does the same.”

In response to Nelson’s humility in receiving the certificate of appreciation, District 2 Supervisor Bruno Sabatier emphasized, “Mr. Wes, that response is exactly why you are being recognized, so thank you for your quick and selfless actions.” Those gathered agreed with a heartfelt round of applause.
